Services
Hospice Kawartha Lakes provides unique and essential services to our clients their families and this community, which, at a difficult time, attempt to increase awareness, support, and most importantly quality of life. At HKL we believe that everyone should be able to live, until they die. Our volunteers provide time, compassionate care, respite, bereavement support and information.
Palliative Care
Hospice palliative care is a philosophy of care that provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual care for individuals facing life-threatening illness and their families. This holistic approach helps individuals to live their remaining days in dignity and comfort and provides support to the family.
This type of care requires teamwork. In an effort to include our clients in their community, Hospice Kawartha Lakes works with a team of trained and talented volunteers, as well is an active member of the Interdisciplinary Health Team that includes but is not limited to family, caregivers, volunteers, community agencies, health professionals and physicians.
Our volunteers provide visits that create a safe emotional environment, and offer families a period of relief. Visits are in, but not limited to home, care facilities and hospital.
Our services are free of charge, and there is no waiting list.

Bereavement Support
Hospice Kawartha Lakes’ individual support and grief programming can help you to move through your grief journey. Bereavement support is offered to children, youth and adults, families of Hospice clients as well as any community member who is experiencing bereavement.
Individual support is provided by staff or visiting volunteers. Visits are in, but not limited to home, school, care facilities and hospital. Hospice Kawartha Lakes aims to help the grieving move through their grief to help move toward a new wholeness and health.

Children and Youth Programming
Hospice Kawartha Lakes staff and volunteers recognize the special impact of loss for children and youth. Following an initial assessment, the Coordinator may offer in-home visits by a volunteer. Hospice Kawartha Lakes offers grief groups for children and teens. This offers the child or youth an opportunity to express the meaning of loss in a safe and caring environment to assist with the development of healthy ways of coping. The groups are fun and use a variety of interactive methods, such as expressive art, therapeutic journaling, crafts and games to assist with the healing process.

Support for Caregivers
Hospice Kawartha Lakes is aware of the stress and anxiety many caregivers experience while caring for a loved one. Caregivers, friends and families can contact us to receive support from our staff and our trained volunteers. The Coordinator may offer supports including ongoing telephone contact, a volunteer to provide respite, and/or a volunteer to visit with the caregiver to listen, share, and provide information.
Education
Hospice Kawartha Lakes provides ongoing training, education, and groups to support our volunteers. Our staff and trained volunteers are available to come and speak with groups, classes, or other organizations to provide information and increase public awareness of hospice palliative care, grief, and bereavement.

At the Hospice Kawartha Lakes office, we have an extensive collection of books, videos and reference materials on a wide range of subjects. These resources are available to borrow as needed free of charge.
